GREEK CLOTHING

Traditional Greek costume varied from region to region, but there were some common elements. It was worn mainly for important ceremonies, national holidays, weddings and Greek dances.

Men’s costume

– Fustanella white skirt, white shirt, waistcoat, belt, socks, hat

Women’s outfit

– dress, camisole or embroidered jacket, apron, scarf or decorative head covering, jewelry (large, gold)

Hospitality

Greeks are masters of hospitality. If they invite you to their home, they will feed you like at a Greek wedding.

Religion

Orthodoxy has great significance. It is visible in holidays, icons in homes, signs of the cross in the street, etc.

GREEK CULTURE

Greece delights with delicious food – gyros, olives, feta or baklava are just some of the delicacies. Greeks often eat together and for a long time.

HOUSES AND STREETS IN GREECE

The houses in Greece, especially on the islands, are white with blue shutters, and the streets are narrow and full of flowers.

WHAT CAN SURPRISE US?

Greeks can eat very late – dinner at 10pm is no surprise.

 

Or that they greet each other with great warmth, even if they don’t know each other. Greek culture is very open and spontaneous.

CLIMATE OF GREECE

Greece has a warm, Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and dry, and winters are mild and humid. The best times to go on holiday are spring, summer and early autumn – then the weather is sunny and ideal for sunbathing or sightseeing.

The Greeks live in a world that combines Antiquity with the here and now. One moment you can be standing on the ruins of the Temple of Aphrodite, and the next moment you can be drinking a frappe with the locals in a modern café.

Orthodoxy is the dominant religion – about 90% of the population

Greece has over 6,000 islands, but only about 200 are inhabited.

🏛️ Democracy was founded in Athens over 2,500 years ago.

🧿 Greeks believe in the “evil eye” and often wear blue amulets for protection.

🎭 Theatre was born in Greece – the first comedies and tragedies were created here.
